In Memory

Rescuing both livestock and domestic animals is our life’s purpose. It is our absolute honor to rescue, rehabilitate, grow and love the animals who call Xanadu their forever home. But with that great love and devotion comes heartbreak in ultimately losing them. Our ultimate goal is to give them the best days of their lives-no matter how many days that may be. This page is dedicated with love to the memory of the friends we have lost along the way.

Bruno

More Info About Bruno

Bruno

Sick and skinny, this 6 month old Jersey mix bull calf was dumped at a slaughter auction to be sold off to the veal market. He was suffering from pneumonia and a severe case of pinkeye, and completely withdrawn never knowing a human touch, and we battled it out at auction with the Veal dealer--determined not to let that be his final fate.

As we got him home, he went through intensive vet treatments for his first 6 weeks at the sanctuary. His immune system was compromised from the horrible conditions we rescued him from, and he just couldn't lick the pneumonia or pinkeye despite multiple treatments. After staying in the Vet Hospital ICU and treated with IV antibiotics and fluids and other supplements, he finally started to turn the corner on the pneumonia, but his pinkeye continued to worsened. He already had scarring when we rescued him, but we started treatments immediately hoping we could lick it. At one point the ulceration covered the entire eye and the vet thought our sweet boy would lose his eye since it wasn't responding to any antibiotics, but we were going to try everything first to give him his best shot. Luckily, with some creative treatments and support from all his followers, he rounded the corner and the stabilized. Even on his road to recovery, he continued to show signs of thriving at Xanadu!

Bruno was rescued in 2018 along with Lucille. He lived an amazing, however short life of 4 ½ years here with us at Xanadu. He was happy and healthy, running and playing ball, and was the life of the party for 4 straight years. His last year with us, he began to show signs of a congenital orthopedic issue that could not be treated surgically. After seeing all the best vets, including Mississippi State Vet School, we were only able to keep him comfortable and happy for 6 months. Ultimately, his bones became too brittle and he couldn’t get around much at all without a decent level of pain. Surrounded by love and all his farm friends, we sent Bruno over the Rainbow Bridge in October of 2022. As our first livestock rescue, it was a heart breaking loss, but knowing he lived 4 HAPPY years he would have never gotten any other way, brings us peace. Bruno will always be an icon for Xanadu Animal Sanctuary.

Trumpet

More Info About Trumpet

Trumpet

Trumpet was another victim of “Easter present gone bad”. She was adopted by a family at Easter time, and as soon as she grew to 2 months old, she was confined to a small cage with little room to move around and offered no supplements to her regular bagged rabbit food.

The family ultimately dropped her off at Animal control, and because of her physical state no one wanted to adopt her. We swooped in and rescued her, and after thorough evaluations, she was completely feral and scared, dirty with broken fur and injuries consistent with long term confinement with little to no sign of human or other contact. She was a good bit underweight for her size, and she had muscle damage to one leg and unable to use it at full capacity, and a potential heart condition that limited to her activity significantly.

Soon after arrival at Xanadu, she enjoyed time outside, started to drop her feral and scared exterior and began to enjoy a variety of cuisine including spinach and carrots. While we haven’t branched out completely in rabbit rescue, she was a great ambassador to teach us all about what rabbits truly need and want. Unfortunately, Trumpet had a neuro disorder that didn’t allow her to live out a typically full bunny life. We lost her in 2018.

Lil Mac

More Info About Lil Mac

Lil Mac

Little Mac was dumped by his previous owner at a local McDonald’s. For several days, he ran from car to car begging for his meals before we finally caught him to get the care he needed. He showed signs on ongoing abuse with battle wound scars on his face and chin, and a broken tail. It never dampened his spirit though.

Little Mac loves all people once he warms up to them, and enjoys the company of other large dogs. He is also our best “snorer” at bedtime around the farm. He battles it out with the pigs!

Lil’ Mac lived a long and healthy happy life with us til he was about 14 years old. He passed away peacefully in my arms, sent to join all the doggy friends he made along the way with us at Xanadu.

Hank

More Info About Hank

Hank

Hank is a dapple dachshund who somehow mysteriously ended up as a pound puppy. Because the shelter was so overcrowded, he was in danger of not having enough time to be adopted out. We were able to rescue him literally minutes before the vet’s arrival for the weekly visits to thin out the shelter.

He lived a long and healthy happy life as an indoor/outdoor dog with several other dog and kitty friends to constantly play with. He ultimately passed away in 2022 as an old man of 14 years old.
